Subsurface Scattering
发布于:2025-08-12
Purpose:
Subsurface scattering simulates the optical phenomenon where light enters the garment material surface, scatters within the material, and partially exits. This effect is especially important for representing semi-translucent or fine-fiber fabrics such as silk, cotton-linen blends, and chiffon. It makes rendered garments look more realistic and natural by adding softness and depth to the material.

Subsurface Scattering Parameters | ||
---|---|---|
Shallow Layer | Texture Map | Describes light scattering details near the material surface, affecting how light diffuses just after entering. It usually represents fine surface structures and high-frequency details, simulating color and brightness changes in the shallow layer. |
Color | The base color for shallow scattering, determining the hue of scattered light. Combined with the texture map, it creates natural color gradients and depth, influencing final color saturation and translucency tones. | |
Weight | Controls the contribution ratio of the shallow scattering effect within the overall scattering. Weight distribution adjusts the strength and proportion of light scattering across layers to achieve the desired visual balance. | |
Radius | Defines the maximum distance light travels within the material at this layer. Larger values mean deeper light penetration, yielding a more transparent and soft material. Shorter distances confine scattering near the surface, making the material appear denser. It affects the spatial range of shallow light scattering and adjusts translucency and softness. | |
Middle Layer | Texture Map | Reflects light scattering characteristics in the mid-layer of the material, affecting overall translucency and internal light diffusion. Controls color depth and uniformity of scattering inside, representing fiber density and fabric thickness variations. |
Color | Base color for middle layer scattering, defining the hue of scattered light. Together with the texture, it produces natural color transitions and layering, impacting color saturation and translucency in rendering. | |
Weight | Controls the middle layer’s contribution to overall scattering. Adjusts the balance and strength of scattering across layers to achieve an ideal visual effect. | |
Radius | Sets the max light travel distance in the mid-layer. Greater distances increase softness and translucency; shorter distances localize scattering, giving a heavier feel. Influences the spatial scope of middle layer scattering and adjusts translucency and softness. | |
Deep Layer | Texture Map | Simulates scattering after light penetrates deep into the material, affecting color absorption and light attenuation within inner fabric layers. It expresses the fabric’s base color and absorption, defining material depth and shadow areas after light transmission. |
Color | Base color for deep layer scattering, controlling the hue of scattered light. Combined with the texture map to create natural color gradients and depth, influencing final color saturation and translucency. | |
Weight | Controls the deep layer’s contribution ratio in overall scattering, balancing scattering strengths and proportions to fine-tune the material’s visual realism. | |
Radius | Defines the maximum light travel distance in the deep layer. Larger distances create more transparent and soft appearance; smaller distances confine scattering near the surface, making the fabric appear thicker. Adjusts the spatial range of deep layer scattering and translucency softness. |
