Substance Description:

Substance is an integrated concept encompassing a material system, toolchain, and associated file formats, with the file types being an integral part of the system.

At its core, the Substance system generates textures—such as fabric wrinkles, surface patterns, and colors—through procedural parameters, rather than relying on traditional static image maps.

Common file formats within this system include:

  1. .sbs – Source material file created in Substance Designer, containing the complete node-based editing logic and parameter settings. It is fully editable and modifiable.

  2. .sbsar – Compiled material package file, exported from .sbs as the final format. It can be imported into various 3D software applications while retaining its parametric features—meaning material attributes such as fabric color or texture density can still be adjusted after import.
