Jacket Production Tutorial
I. Style Analysis
The first step in modeling is to observe the object:
Upon observation, the ribbed fabric on the jacket collar, cuffs and hem is assembled from multiple pattern pieces sewn together. There are also two separate small pattern pieces covering part of the hem ribbing on the garment bottom. When stitching these small hem panels, be sure to switch the stitch type to closed seam.
II. Pattern Arrangement
Step 2: When laying out the pattern pieces, adjust their positions appropriately to wrap around the avatar. This prevents mesh penetration during simulation after sewing.
When selecting the rib pattern pieces for the collar, cuffs and hem, you can select all scattered pieces simultaneously and place them together.
III. Pattern Sewing
Step 3: When sewing the panels, ensure all stitching lines follow a consistent direction. In the 3D viewport, the sewing lines should run parallel to one another without overlapping.
Sew all wind flaps except the one at the jacket hem. The hem wind flap shall be positioned and sewn after the zipper assembly is completed.
Make sure to change the stitch type for the wind flap to closed seam.
IV. Pattern Simulation
Step 4: Harden all pattern pieces prior to starting the simulation. This facilitates subsequent adjustments to the panels and prevents the pieces from shifting erratically during sewing simulation.
Stretch the front panels to a proper state, so that the zipper will not clip through the fabric after simulation upon installation.
V. Zipper Installation
Navigate to: Assets → Zipper in the menu options.
Click to select the newly created zipper in the right-side panel.
Click the starting point of the zipper, then click the gap between pattern pieces and continue onto the next pattern piece. Repeat until the entire zipper path is selected, then double-click the endpoint to finish. At this point, the zipper line will appear gray. Follow the same procedure to select the zipper path on the opposite side. The appearance of zipper pattern pieces indicates that the zipper installation is completed successfully.
After the zipper is installed and simulated successfully, the result will be displayed in the 3D viewport.
VI. Fabric Import
To endow the garment with diverse textures, you may import fabrics after most adjustments are finished.
- Click the plus sign (+) next to the word Fabric in the fabric panel to create a default fabric.
- Select the default fabric, then click Open within the property editing window.
- Import your saved fabric files.
- Select the pattern pieces that need fabric application, then drag and drop the fabric onto the panels.
After fabric assignment is completed, click simulation again. The physical properties of the garment will change once fabrics are applied; re-simulation enables the fabric to drape and deform in accordance with the physical parameters of the imported fabric.
VII. Key Points for Garment Adjustment
Once you have pulled the fabric into your desired shape, for paired linked pattern pieces: select the panel, right-click, and choose Apply Symmetric Pattern Shape. The piece will automatically adjust to match the shape of its symmetrical counterpart. Remember to run simulation afterward.
For pattern pieces that require a neat, stiff texture such as sleeves, collars and hem ribbing, you may apply hardening treatment.
If you wish to preserve the shape of sleeves, use the freeze function on the sleeves.
