I. Style Analysis

As the first step of modeling, we need to clarify and analyze our design objectives:

By analyzing the structure and craftsmanship details of the down jacket, we can identify several key features that need to be noted during modeling. As a general workflow rule, we first build the main body of the garment. Details such as the placket, pockets and buttons can be added later once the main body shape is finalized and requires no further revisions.

Step 2: Adjust the positions of pattern pieces appropriately during layout to avoid mesh clipping during sewing simulation.

Step 3: When performing sewing operations, ensure all sewing lines appear parallel within the 3D viewport. In down jacket production, the placket is sewn to the inner lines of the front piece, set back a certain length from the finished edge. Create an inner line of identical spacing on the collar; you may use the measuring tool to check the dimension.

Measure the distance between the internal line and the finished edge, then create an internal line at the identical spacing on the collar for placket sewing.

Remove the existing sewing lines connecting the outer shell and the lining, then re-sew the lining pieces back together.

IV. Pattern Simulation

Step 4:

Apply stiffness to all pattern pieces before starting the simulation. This facilitates garment adjustment, and our adjustment goal is to achieve a neat, structured fit on the avatar.
Change the avatar’s hairstyle to bald or short styles such as pixie cut. For garments equipped with hoods, short hairstyles deliver a clearer simulation display effect.

V. Down Filling for Pattern Pieces

Select the pattern pieces that need down filling, right-click and choose Create Lining Layer.

Assign positive and negative pressure values to the outer and lining layers of down-filled panels. Normally, the absolute values of positive and negative pressure are equal, while pressure settings vary for different styles. The larger the absolute value, the fuller and puffier the down expansion effect will be.

VI. Fabric and Pattern Property Adjustment

After down filling, adjust the fabric properties, including fabric physical parameters, internal line elasticity, sewing thread elasticity, and shrinkage rate of the outer pattern pieces.

Physical parameters cover stretch and bending values. A higher stretch value means the fabric is less stretchable; a higher bending value delivers stiffer and crisper fabric texture.
Internal line elasticity and sewing thread elasticity serve the same purpose: enhancing natural wrinkles.
Increasing the shrinkage rate of outer panels will strengthen the garment’s puffiness and wrinkled appearance.
